Diversity Style Guide
Sensitivity reading--also known as diversity reading and authenticity reading—is an editorial service that points out any descriptions, expressions, or ideas in the story which can be considered harmful.

This service is not meant to censor the writer, but to open their eyes into new perspectives.

As a sensitivity reader, I use my experiences as part of several marginalized and minority groups to point out instances in your story that might cause offense or disbelief with your readers. I also use my knowledge and research to point out issues with topics outside of my authenticity.
Checking for:
  • Stereotypes
  • Harmful Biases
  • Misrepresentation
  • Contested Words
  • Limited Perspectives

Topics I read for:
  • Latinx Cultures (specifically Puerto Rican)
  • Hispanic Languages
  • Tokenism (only Latinx person in a room)
  • LGBTQIA+ (queer, bisexual, pansexual, coming out "late", questioning sexuality)
  • Islander, Climate Disasters, Hurricanes, State of Emergency, Food Shortages/Rationing
Sensitivity reading is subjective to the reader's personal experiences with the topic at hand, and thus cannot guarantee to encompass everyone's own experiences.
